Flood maps prompt costly insurance hikes for homeowners
Ann Marie Morvant has lived in the Bayou Gauche community for 14 years — an area in St. Charles Parish that has never flooded. However, the days may be numbered for the community under the new Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps. Her neighborhood now falls below the recommended elevation. “It’s insane,” Morvant said. “It’s truly a no-win situation.” The new flood maps also comes with a steep increase in flood insurance. “It would change my policy to $12-15,000,” she said. Morvant currently pays $325 annually for flood insurance.
