Event Description:

Major Atlantic basin hurricane.

Catastrophic impacts Haiti as it along with major impacts in Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica.

US impacts moderate to severe wind damage across the east coasts of Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, tidal flooding in Northeast Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.  Inland flooding in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Summary of Hazards:

Wind

Most of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina east coast experienced hurricane strength winds.  Hurricane force winds have impacted parts of Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, and the Bahamas.

Rainfall

10″-15″ in areas of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.  Inland flooding impacting Raleigh, Fayetteville & Florence, NC and Norfolk & Chesapeake,VA.

Storm Surge

Storm tides as high as 12 ft. Jacksonville, FL,  Brunswick, GA, Savannah, GA, and Charleston, SC.

Charleston Harbor peaked at 9 ft, Savannah River peaked at 12 ft.

Population Impact Projections:

Up to 10 million people expected to lose power in United States.

 

Economic Impacts Projections:

CoreLogic forecasts $327 billion in storm surge damage to homes in Florida, Georgia, South  Carolina, and South Carolina.

RMS estimates $20 – $30 billion in insured losses.

State of Florida forecasts $45 million in damage to public infrastructure
